WWF PROJECT

The Tun-Mustapha-Park  –
Marine and Coastal Protection in Malaysia

This project aims to eliminate blast or dynamite fishing in northern Borneo (Malaysia).

Coral Reef Before and After a Fish Bomb Attack

Marine and coastal protection

The WWF project, in collaboration with the Tun Mustapha Park (TMP) and the local committee – composed of members of government organisations (the Coast Guard, the Maritime Police, the Ministry of Fisheries), environmental associations and representatives of local communities – aims to eliminate blast or dynamite fishing in northern Borneo (Malaysia). This is a common practice that involves the use of explosives to stun or kill schools of fish for easy collection. The project is part of a larger one that aims to protect marine biodiversity in the Semporna and Tun Mustapha Park areas and support the local population by empowering them to preserve existing resources. The project started in 2018 and will end in 2021.
